FYE living and learning community

What is First Year Experience Living and Learning Community?

If you choose to be a participant in the First Year Experience (FYE) program, you will live with other first-year students in Wadsworth Hall. FYE is a co-ed and chemical-free living environment. Several upper-level students will serve as resident assistants, program coordinator, and mentors on your floor, ensuring that you learn your way around campus, get involved, make friends, and get help with any academic challenges. FYE will help make your transition to life as a college student easier.

As a participant in the program, you will:

  • Receive help in becoming involved on campus and adapting to campus life.
  • Become a member of a very close-knit community where many lasting friendships form.
  • Live and interact with other first-year students.
  • Be an active part of hall activities.

What makes FYE different?

Living in FYE is different than living anywhere else in the residence halls. Some unique aspects of the FYE houses include:

  • A community atmosphere where everyone works together to help first-year students succeed.
  • A chemical free hall of all first-year students.
  • An abundance of leadership opportunities from House President to Birthday Chair.

What do FYE residents think?

  • It’s active.  There are opportunities every week for experiencing college . . . its definitely not boring!
  • I have made a lot of friends, and I have gotten involved in a lot more than I would have if I chose to live somewhere else.
  • Having people willing to help me has made my first year much easier.

What are some typical FYE activities?

As a participant in the FYE program, you will have the opportunity to get involved in numerous social and educational activities:

Educational Opportunities

  • Enroll in the “Frameworks for Success” class. This is a one-credit course designed to help first-year students become acclimated to university life.
  • Develop an academic plan with your peer mentor.
  • Attend presentations on topics such as time management, résumé writing, and campus resources.

Social Opportunities

  • Safe House, the Residence Hall Halloween Haunted House.
  • Michigan Tech’s annual Winter Carnival. Activities include competitions in snow sculpture, ice bowling, snow volleyball, broomball, snowshoe racing, snowboarding, skiing, and curling.
  • Sporting activities including IM Sports, Broomball, and Ultimate Frisbee.
  • Numerous weekly and monthly social activities. Some past activities have included sledding, cookouts, camping, movie nights, coffeehouse, campus sporting events, and a annual team challenge course.
  • Campus Fine Arts events such as concerts, theater productions, and comedians.

What is expected of FYE participants?

The FYE staff promotes a cooperative atmosphere on the floor by encouraging residents to maintain a positive attitude toward other residents and participate in planned activities. One of our goals is to develop a strong sense of community spirit and involvement. Here are some of the major expectations:

  • Enroll in the “Frameworks for Success” class and attend study groups.
  • Participate in Orientation, the team challenge course team building activity, and other required programs.
  • Attend selected campus activities such as sporting events, cultural events, and other events sponsored by campus organizations.
  • Maintain a Chemical Free lifestyle (no alcohol, drugs, or tobacco).
  • Cost of participating in FYE is a $25 fee per semester. This fee goes towards programming, activities, and additional staff to help create this great environment. The fee is billed to your university account each semester.
