The Forest Resources and Environmental Science (FRES) Learning Community is a dynamic combination of academics and appreciation for the natural world.

The FRES House is specifically designed for students seeking the following degrees:

      • Forestry
      • Applied Ecology and Environmental Sciences
      • Wildlife Ecology and Management.

As a participant in the program, you will:

  • Receive help in becoming involved on campus and adapting to campus life.
  • Become a member of a very close-knit community where many lasting friendships form.
  • Live and interact with other students pursueing degrees in the School of Forest Resources & Environmental Science.
  • Gain greated interaction with SFRES Faculty & Staff.
  • Attend field trips and study sessions that enhance your academic experience
  • Participate in fun actvities and events at Michigan Tech.

What are some typical FRES activities?

As a participant in the FRES program, you will have the opportunity to get involved in numerous social and educational activities:

Educational Opportunities

  • Enroll in the “Frameworks for Success” class. This is a one-credit course designed to help first-year students become acclimated to university life. 
  • Weekly study sessions with peer mentors and even an occasional visit by the SFRES faculty.
  • Attend field trips designed to enhance your academic experience including viewing bird migration, visiting a natural area/preserve and other activities that allow you to experience the natural wonders of Upper Michigan.

Social Opportunities

  • Safe House (see our photo below), the Residence Hall Halloween Haunted House.
  • Michigan Tech’s annual Winter Carnival. Activities include competitions in snow sculpture, ice bowling, snow volleyball, broomball, snowshoe racing, snowboarding, skiing, and curling.
  • Sporting activities including IM Sports, Broomball, and Ultimate Frisbee.
  • Numerous weekly and monthly social activities. Some past activities have included sledding, cookouts, camping, movie nights, coffeehouse, campus sporting events, and a annual team challenge course.
  • Campus Fine Arts events such as concerts, theater productions, and comedians.

What is expected of FRES participants?

The FRES staff promotes a cooperative atmosphere on the floor by encouraging residents to maintain a positive attitude toward other residents and participate in planned activities. Here are some of the major expectations:

  • Enroll in the “Frameworks for Success” class and attend study groups if you are a first-year student in the house.
  • Participate in Orientation, the team challenge course team building activity, and other required programs.
  • Attend selected campus activities such as sporting events, cultural events, and other events sponsored by campus organizations.
  • Cost of participating in FRES is a $25 fee per semester. This fee goes towards programming, activities, and additional staff to help create this great environment. The fee is billed to your university account each semester.
