What is the Computer Science Learning Community?
Preparing for a degree in Computer Science is challenging. But, you can set yourself up for success in this field by selecting to live in the CSLC. The Computer Science Learning Community (CSLC) is a select group of students, staff and faculty who share your academic interests in the field of Computer Science. Together you will explore Computer Science, share ideas, make friends, study for classes, and have some fun.
The CSLC is open to student pursuing the following majors:
- Computer Science
- Software Engineering
- Computer Systems Science
As a member of the CSLC you will be enrolled in the same four academic courses during the fall semester. These courses are tied to the Computer Science major and include a college success course. You will also live in a co-ed residential area on third floor East McNair Hall along with a specially trained CS Mentor. The CSLC is coordinated by the Department of Computer Science and Student Life.

What are some typical CSLC activities?
You will be enrolled in linked courses and live in the same residence hall area as well as
- Meet with Computer Science faculty members.
- Talk with your CS Mentor and complete an academic plan.
- Participate in a weekly study group for fall semester.
- Explore CS by visiting a local or regional corporation.
- Attend fine arts performances, major campus lectures, and athletic events.
When you arrive on campus, you will be asked to complete a CSLC Community Agreement which includes the above activities and others.
What is expected of CSLC members?
- Actively participate in the community including programs and house meetings.
- If a first-year student, complete your first-year courses linked to the CSLC.
- Meet during the semester with faculty from the CS department to learn more about the opportunities available to you.
- Follow all guidelines on the CS Learning Community Agreement.
- Cost of participating in CS Learning Community is a $25 fee per semester. This fee goes towards programming, activities, and additional staff to help create this great environment. The fee is billed to your university account each semester.
